CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The headlights of Nicky’s car cut through the long, dark forest. It had taken them an hour to get there by car, and now Ken was quiet in Nicky’s passenger seat as they drove. Ainsley Gibbons, the vice president’s mistress, lived deep in these woods, apparently. It was a rich neighborhood, each house separated by acres of trees. Nicky could only assume the privacy was exactly what the VP needed to hide his other family.

“I still can’t believe this,” Nicky said as she drove them steadily through the night. “A whole other family. Damn.”

“I know,” Ken muttered, looking out the window. “We really can’t let it get out.”

“Never,” Nicky said. “The vice president said he’d have both our jobs if we leak it.”

Ken nodded. “Or worse.”

“We’ll make sure it stays contained.”

“This is going to cause plenty of press...” Ken trailed off. “We can’t let that happen, either.”

“We won’t.”

The headlights swam through the darkness of the forest. The blackness of the shade had a way of swallowing up the light so that even though the car was moving quickly, it felt as if it was moving slowly. It seemed to take a long time to travel the narrow road, though really it only took a few minutes before she was able to see the edge of the trees.

As they drew closer, all Nicky could wonder was if Natalia would really be there. If the VP’s second family was jealous of his “real” family, then that could be motive. Ainsley, herself, could be a prime suspect. The VP already described her as an obsessive woman, someone who wasn’t afraid to blackmail.

“Maybe this Ainsley wants to use Natalia for leverage,” Nicky said, thinking out loud. “Maybe she wants to use her to get the VP to come clean about their affair.”

“If that’s the case, why hasn’t she come forward yet?” Ken asked.

Nicky chewed on her lip as she drove. “That’s the question, isn’t it? Who knows what type of woman Ainsley is?”

“Well, we’re about to find out,” Ken said.

Nicky pulled to a stop outside of the Gibbons’ home and killed the engine. The house was regal and rich-looking with its towering columns and marble busts alighting the lawn like sentinels. The sky grew darker as the clouds advanced to block the moon. The house was aglow with lights from within. There were two cars parked in front of the house: one a rather expensive looking black sedan and the other a white Cadillac sedan.

Nicky and Ken got out of the car and walked up to the door. Nicky took a deep breath and knocked. The house—the whole forest—was eerily silent, eerily still.

Then, a set of high heels clicking on the floor beyond the door. The door opened to reveal a woman in a tight, long, maroon dress. Her hair was silvery blonde, and her eyes were as blue as ice, and she was holding an ice pack to her cheek—as if she’d just been punched.

“Can I help you?” she asked. Her voice was as cold as her stare.
